Illinois Anti-Bullying Laws
Illinois laws are strict when it comes to bullying and cyberbullying. In 2012, the Illinois Human Rights Commission approved legislation that requires schools to implement guidelines aimed at preventing both bullying and cyberbullying beginning in the fall of 2012. Moreover, the bill also requires school districts to regularly update their policies and collect data on bullying incidents. School administrators are permitted to suspend or expel students who threaten another student or school employee via the Internet.
Since 2010, Illinois law has adopted an expanded definition of bullying that includes bullying via e-mail, text message or social media sites. Under Illinois’s anti-bullying law, the following groups are protected:
• National origin
• Marital status
• Physical or mental disability
• Military status
• Sexual orientation
• Gender-related identity or expression
• Unfavorable discharge from military service
• Association with a person or group with one or more of the aforementioned actual or perceived characteristics
• Any other distinguishing characteristic
